According to WHO’s Chief Scientist Dr. Soumya, Swaminathan, “Virus of COVID-19 can survive in the air and can get transmitted but in a very limited environment.”
Amidst of coronavirus treatment, Dr. Swaminathan said that various water droplets in the air get present as we speak, shout, sing or breathe. These are normal droplets that fall on the ground within 1-2 meters. But, there are also smaller size droplets in the air that stay in the air for longer and take longer to settle down. These nano-droplets can move with the wind and thus have much potency to transfuse non-affected people in much less time. This form of transmission is called COVID-19 which is air-borne.
Additionally, technical lead on the Covid-19 pandemic at WHO Maria Van Kerkhove stated, “we have been talking about the possibility of airborne transmission and aerosol transmission as one of the modes of transmission of coronavirus.” She further adds, “The possibility of airborne transmission in a public setting-especially in very specific conditions, crowded poorly ventilated settings that have been described but cannot be ruled out.”
